Every piece in the seating collection is upholstered with the finest vegetable tanned steer leather processed in the United States. Nestled along the Susquehanna River in Western Pennsylvania, the tannery that makes it has been supplying custom saddle makers and luggage makers since 1867 for their best leathergoods. Some of the finest leathergoods companies in the world purchase their leather, including such noted companies as Louis Vuitton and Hartmann. We purchase their finest grade of "English Bridle" saddle leather which is tanned using a traditional "green" method called vegetable pit tanning.
This company understands the art of hand making quality leather. A process which starts by obtaining the finest prime grade steer hide from Canada, then tanning each ultra-thick hide the old fashioned way. Although now a state of the art tannery, they still use the original methods developed almost
a century and a half ago by the company founder, who developed
natural tanning formulations utilizing the barks of trees. They soak their hides in these natural tanning liquors for two full weeks before
drum-dying, hot stuffing, and hand finishing, a process which involves great skill and effort. The result is an exceptionally strong, full grain, non-toxic leather possesing a wonderful feel, a feel which in time develops an incredible patina. They not only make great leather, they practice environmentally friendly methods which have earned the company
the Governor's Waste Minimization Award.
Saddle makers and luggage makers depend on this exact leather for its ability to withstand sun, rain, and rugged outdoor use. Unlike commonly used chrome tanned cow leather our steer hide and prestreching method is very strong and will stay put over time. Our chairs are designed primarily for indoor applications, although it’s fine to use them outdoors in a totally dry covered environment.
