Early American Colonists and Shakers painted their furniture and interiors with milk paint using a formula that dated back to Ancient Egypt. Up until the middle 1800's paint was not sold commercially. People made their own. The most common recipe contained milk protein, quicklime and earth pigments. Because of the unique durability of milk paint, many fine examples still exist that are hundreds of years old and whose finish is just as true as the day the paint was applied. Milk paint is now gaining an even wider usage because it contains only ingredients that are not toxic or harmful to the environment.

The deep rich natural colors of milk paint reflect those colors found on existing antique furniture and buildings. Like the paints used hundreds of years ago, the colors in milk paint will not fade.

As in the original formulas, milk paint is made from milk protein, lime, clay and earth pigments such as ochre, umber, iron oxide, lamp black, etc. Milk paint contains no lead, chemical preservatives, fungicides, hydrocarbons or any other petroleum derivatives.

José Regueiro exclusively uses only the original 'Old Fashioned Milk Paint' brand. We custom blend dozens of original colors for use on our painted furniture. Each layer of paint is carefully hand brushed and sanded in multiple coats to create an extremely rich depth of color and texture. We have been using Milk Paint since 1997 along with our own unique clear non-yellowing topcoat or Danish oil. These finishes enhance the durability of milk paint and provides an extremely tough protective finish.
