about our leather

Click to enlargeThe seating collection is constructed with the finest hardwoods available from sources in Michigan, a state with a rich history in the lumber trade and furniture industry. These timbers come from forests in Michigan and Ontario or as far away as Asia and Africa. Only the highest grades make it to the studio and into this furniture, in fact the Hard Maple is some of the finest of this beautiful wood available. Why?, because its specified in only the "Select White" grade for starters. This means boards are selected at the mill for uniform white color while boards with the brownish "heartwood" is picked out and sold for less. After further milling at the studio the boards creamy white flesh is exposed and if any of the darker heartwood remains it can usually be milled off or cut around.

The Cherry, Oak (see White Oak logs above) and Walnut sometimes have light colored "sapwood". On these woods the opposite is true, the light colored sapwood is milled or cut off to leave only the darker heartwood for uniform color. José Regueiro does not stain his wood to try to blend in the colors of the heartwood and sapwood, preferring the natural beauty and color finished to perfection. This is one of the reasons his furniture costs more. Finding the best for people who demand the finest.
